Stunning final play gives Central Michigan win over No. 22 Oklahoma State
According to the Oklahoman’s Berry Tramel, O’Dey checked with College Football Officiating’s National Coordinator of Football Officials Roger Reddings, who said the game should have ended “on an accepted live ball loss-of-down penalty with no time left”.
There is an exception to this rule that says enforcing the foul creates a loss of down, bringing the game to its conclusion.
Corey Willis scored the winning touchdown after grabbing a lateral from Jesse Kroll at the Oklahoma State 12.
But Central Michigan bucked the odds, combining the two successfully to beat Oklahoma State.
A last-second intentional grounding penalty on OSU quarterback Mason Rudolph, however, gave CMU one last untimed down in which Chippewas quarterback Cooper Rush tossed a Hail Mary, and a lateral led to a miraculous Chippewas victory.
You may recall, this is the same team that pulled off that insane Hail Mary-lateral play against Western Kentucky in the Bahamas Bowl two seasons ago. but couldn’t get the victory because of a failed two-point conversion. In that fabulous finish, Central Michigan went for 2 and the win and did not convert. The Chippewas begin the season 2-0.
Oklahoma State: Even with the insane ending and a possible mistake by officials in awarding that last play, the Cowboys were hoping for a relatively easy win For the second straight season, CMU gave them all they could handle. With Central Michigan driving, Ramon Richards intercepted a pass inside the final five minutes. I feel for Oklahoma State but this play was truly incredible and one of the most awesome plays I’ve ever seen in college football.
