Hillary Clinton vows to ‘call out bigotry’ as feud with Trump grows
To make her point, she cited an article for Time magazine by Matthew G. Olsen, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center, arguing that the Islamic State, also called ISIS or ISIL, is working “to advocate for Trump”, as he put it. At a rally in Pensacola, Florida, on Friday, the Republican said Clinton is “so protected” that “she could walk into this arena right now and shoot somebody with 20,000 people watching, right smack in the middle of the heart”.
Many are still nervous about Trump, concerned about his beliefs on social issues, his bombastic persona and the personal lifestyle of the thrice-married, twice-divorced NY real estate mogul and former reality-television host.
“So”, she continued, “he has tapped into this very ugly stream in America”.
Still, one man has without a doubt consigned himself to the basket of deplorables, and that’s Trump himself, who vilifies undocumented immigrants and Muslims and Mexicans, mocks disabled people and has the widest misogynistic streak of any candidate in memory. Clinton stressed the rest of Trump’s supporters feel let down by the government and economy. And, in the era of hyper connectivity, there is no time to play games.
Of course, while Clinton is taking heat for her comment, Trump’s brand is controversy.
Ms. Clinton then pivoted and tried to characterise the other half of Mr. Trump’s supporters, putting them in “that other basket” and saying they need understanding and empathy.
Needless to say, it didn’t take long for the new conventional wisdom to solidify: Hillary Clinton had made a serious gaffe.
They were, she told the LGBT event, “racist, sexist, xenophobic, Islamophobic – you name it”.
The decision to release a statement came after video of the comment was played repeatedly on cable and broadcast news Saturday morning.
“Wow, Hillary Clinton was SO INSULTING to my supporters, millions of incredible, hard-working people”.
She added: “So I’m not interested in giving aid and comfort to their evil ambitions”. Trump tweeted Saturday morning.
“Basket of Deplorables” quickly became a trending hashtag on Twitter, with users venting their fury at the former secretary of state.
At Friday night’s fundraiser, Clinton said Trump had given voice to hateful rhetoric through his behavior as a candidate for the White House in the November 8 election.
Clinton on Friday night broke Trump supporters down into two groups, one of which she called the “basket of deplorables”.
“Clinton said the other half are people struggling who have found hope in Trump’s message”.
“A lot of this behavior coming from him seems to be expected somehow”, Clinton said. “And that is fine if you are a reality TV star or you are a real estate developer”. Towards the end of August, Clinton had a 95 percent chance of winning the election by 108 electoral votes in the Electoral College. “Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well”. “What a awful thing she said about so many great Americans!”
The potential for exposure by Putin puts the strong-arm Russian president in a position to coerce Trump into appointing Russia-favoring advisors and, should he win, implementing Russia-favoring policies as president.
Ms. Clinton has made similar comments in the past. “Hillary’s detractors in the GOP and the press rip her for not telling the truth, and then when she does, they rip her for doing that”. Yet Trump has caught up to her level of support in several states.
“This election is about beating back bigotry and hate”, Sellers said in an interview.
Start with this: A depressingly high percentage of Donald Trump’s supporters hold abhorrent beliefs, and it insults the intelligence to mince words about that.
