Warriors to sack coach and announce new mentor
The New Zealand Rugby League could not be reached for comment last night, but the Kiwis are in desperate need of a new coach.
Andrew McFadden’s time at the Warriors could be over as soon as tomorrow according to reports in the Daily Telegraph. “We wish Stephen every success with the Warriors”.
“I’ve spoken to people in and around the camp so it’s pretty accurate”, said Carayannis.
The failure to secure a top eight berth turns the heat up on McFadden, who was expected to deliver finals football this year.
“While I’ve got a job to do here I’m really excited about coming on board at the Vodafone Warriors”.
“I’m here to talk about the Kiwis and I’m not going to make a comment on the Warriors”.
“Stephen wants to concentrate on his new full-time responsibilities and feels he can not commit 100 percent to the Kiwis at this time, ending his eight-year reign as national team coach”.
“Winning the 2014 Four Nations was part of dream run, with success at the 2015 Anzac Test, New Zealand’s first mid-year win since 1998, the first time they had beaten Australia in three straight games since 1953 and, subsequently, for the first time ever the world number one ranking”.
The former Parramatta coach has been linked with the Warriors before – especially in 2012 when he was sounded out in the wake of Brian McClennan’s departure.
His current position is as an assistant to Wayne Bennett at the Broncos, a role he will see through until the end of this season – whenever that may be for Brisbane.
Kearney, who will step aside as the national coach of New Zealand, will replace Andrew McFadden who is set to become his assistant coach at the club.
It appears more a matter of when, not if, the troubled playmaker will put pen to paper with the Warriors but managing director Jim Doyle chose his words carefully as the club continue to work through negotiations with the 26-year-old playmaker.
