John Tortorella’s anthem stance draws differing reactions from National Hockey League players
With the World Cup of Hockey just weeks away, Team USA’s coach has made his position clear on whether players should stand for the national anthem.
“He is probably one of the best players in the world”, Tortorella said.
Tortorella said he’ll lead Team USA during the World Cup of Hockey beginning on September 17th.
We are in a great country because we can express ourselves, Tortorella said on Wednesday.
The Blue Jackets and USA coach addressed the controversy after practice on Wednesday at Nationwide Arena, where the national squad is conducting training camp for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey.
“I’ll tell you right now. There’s so much respect for that flag and that anthem, it’s just coming out”, Pavelski said of Tortorella’s quote.
“I love America and thank the military for protecting our freedoms, as well as law enforcement for protecting and serving our communities, but that doesn’t mean I can’t acknowledge that there is still racism today”, said Brown. (“I’m not talking about what happens in our locker room”, Coach said, “especially in that type of situation.”) The players, too, kept relatively mum, but the impact of the visit was palpable.
“But I look at that and I look at our flag, our national anthem, which is the symbol of us”.
Because he plays in San Jose, Pavelski has attended San Francisco 49ers games, but he does not know quarterback Colin Kaepernick, whose decision not to stand for the anthem as a form of political protest has sparked a country-wide debate. I like him. He is a different cat.
He continued, “But with my son over there – this might sound selfish – I want to team up with him and help my country”.
Before we get into Tortorella’s pride in the Red, White and Blue-which he flashes like Cory Schneider’s pads-it is necessary to understand two things.
“I don’t think it was anything. So I feel strongly both ways”. I dont know if that has anything to do with it, Kane said. Team Canada will start Carey Price in goal on Friday in an exhibition game against the USA, but Tortorella wouldnt confirm whether it will be Jonathan Quick, Ben Bishop or Cory Schneider in the Americans net. “As you get older, you figure some things out and grow up at your rate.”. “No idea”, Tortorella said. He said the players were supportive. He can really find some space..
