Instagram automatically stops trolls from posting nasty comments on your photos
Trolling comments can unfortunately be a familiar sight for Instagram users, particularly those who’ve put time and effort into building up a large following.
The other new feature is a custom keyword filter.
To turn on the feature, users can go to the “comments” option in their settings, turn on “hide inappropriate comments” and specify words that they do not want to see on the pictures they post. To make this work, Instagram has applied algorithms that will be able to scan comments for words or phrases which are commonly reported as inappropriate so it knows what to filter and what not to filter. The feature has already started rolling out. You can choose your own list of words or use default words Instagram has provided.
Instagram users, he said, can still also swipe to delete comments, report inappropriate comments and block accounts.
“The beauty of the Instagram community is the diversity of its members”, Systrom wrote. Meanwhile, Instagram points out that now the preconfigured list is only available in English, while the custom keyword filtering isn’t yet supporting languages without spaces, like Chinese, Japanese, and Thai.
Instagram cofounder and CEO Kevin Systrom says its his company’s responsibility “to promote a culture where everyone feels safe to be themselves without criticism or harassment”.
Instagram is known for its lovely images, but the online comments on the social media site can sometimes get downright ugly.
In July, the photo-sharing website – used heavily by celebrities including Beyoncé, Cara Delevingne and Kim Kardashian – gave its most high-profile users the tool to automatically prevent slurs and insults.
Instagram is also updating the way it displays comments to algorithmically rank and show the most relevant comments first, as opposed to the two most recent.
