Kaepernick Kneels Again, This Time on Monday Night Football
The protest follows the recent actions of San Francisco backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who sat while the national anthem played during a preseason game as a protest against the overpolicing of minority communities.
“We know that there has to be change and progress”, Baldwin said, AP reports.
At the conclusion of the previous Monday Night Football game between the Steelers and Redskins, announcers Jon Gruden and Sean McDonough praised Steelers lineman Alejandro Villanueva, who served three tours of duty in Afghanistan, by noting that he sang along with the anthem before the game. It’s largely because football and basketball – as they have captured a larger and larger share of the American sports market over the past half-century – have become far more popular with urban youth. You need those players. Both then appeared on the medal stands with raised, black-gloved fists throughout the USA national anthem in what they called a “human rights salute”.
He has said he is protesting U.S. racial discrimination and police brutality in the wake of multiple high-profile fatal shootings of black men by law enforcement – most often by white police officers.
“What I do believe, though, is the respect for our country, the people who fought for those freedoms and values, the people who protect us here and overseas – those are very important”.
Colin Kaepernick’s protest of standing for the national anthem – which now involves multiple NFL players and other athletes – has sparked a great deal of debate.
It’s too bad that the money quote from Jones, the one that USA Today used for its headline, is a miss.
He was joined on the sidelines by 49ers safety Eric Reid, who knelt beside Kaepernick, while two other teammates, safety Antoine Bethea and linebacker Eli Harold, stood with fists raised during the performance of the “Star Spangled Banner”. “There’s somebody [that used to be] on that 49ers team that commits an act like that … and nobody’s talking about that”.
“I think every American has the right to do or say whatever freedom offers us. I support his decision”. It’s supposed to be the Land of the Free, right?’
“They have rights and we have to respect that”, he said.
Orioles center fielder Adam Jones is one of those athletes who thinks a step beyond a lot of his peers, and it makes him a very interesting interview subject. Women’s soccer is a whiter sport than baseball, and Megan Rapinoe, who is white, made her choice to stand with Kaepernick by kneeling for the anthem.
