President Barack Obama Meets Informally With Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte
During his recent visit to Jakarta, Duterte told Indonesian forces to chase pirates, even if they have to enter Philippine waters, and “blast them off”. Duterte is now on a two-day visit to the country. “Check it out. Check it out”, Duterte recalled telling Obama in a holding room.
The two presidents also conducted a so-called veranda talk, which is a new tradition started by the State Palace to welcome Jokowi’s closest guests, as it is meant to represent a more intimate relationship between the two countries. “I don’t think the guy is qualified to be President of the United States”.
“As I said, when I was asked about this in China, I don’t take these comments personally because it seems as if it’s a phrase he’s used repeatedly, including directed to the Pope and others”.
Obama, closing out his final presidential trip to Asia, said his meetings with foreign leaders during the trip had illustrated that governing is serious business requiring knowledge, preparation and thought-out policies that can actually be implemented.
Until Monday reports surfaced that President Duterte had apparently called the US President a “Son of a Bitch”, the two presidents were said to be scheduled to meet in Laos, but that meeting had been cancelled by Obama’s party. Over 2,000 people have been killed in a crackdown on suspected drug dealers and users since Duterte assumed office in June. “This is the fault of the insane people in the State Department”, he said. You must be respectful. Do not just throw questions and statements. He said that dealing with foreign leaders is serious business and questioned Trump’s ability to successfully navigate these interactions.
Obama’s final stop in Laos included an informal conversation with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on the sidelines of a summit.
President Barack Obama was among several world leaders who listened to Duterte’s brief speech at the East Asia Summit in the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Trump said the progress of US military generals had been stymied, or “reduced to rubble” with Obama as commander-in-chief and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton as his first secretary of state.
For his part, Duterte on Thursday defended his country’s human rights record and called on the United States to help his country combat illicit drugs. The photograph showed about 200 dead Filipino Moros stacked in a common pit, with an American soldier holding a rifle while stepping on the breasts of a naked Moro woman.
Mr. Duterte spoke after Mr. Obama had delivered a speech that referred to human rights.
“I was ready (for Obama)”.
