Emmert says NCAA won’t push ACC on NC
The NCAA announced Monday night that it is taking championship and March Madness tournament games out of North Carolina because of the state’s anti-LGBT HB2 law.
“As representatives of all three divisions, the Board of Governors must advance college sports through policies that resolve core issues affecting student-athletes and administrators”, said G.P. “Bud” Peterson, Board of Governors chair and Georgia Tech president.
The governing board said it was also stripping North Carolina of soccer, golf, tennis, lacrosse and baseball events, and would determine new locations for those competitions in the near future.
In an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, Emmert said the association expects to take a financial hit for moving seven championship events and tournament games out of the state on short notice, but how much is unknown.
In July, the NBA announced it would move the NBA All-Star game from North Carolina because of the law.
The law known as HB2 requires transgender people to use restrooms at schools and government buildings corresponding to the sex on their birth certificates.
The measure has been a focal point in the debate over transgender rights in the United States, sparking legal battles and boycotts by companies, musical performers and other states that have barred public employees from traveling to North Carolina on official business.
Referencing a recent sexual assault scandal at Baylor University, she went on to say, ‘The decision is an assault to female athletes across the nation. “The protection and safety and security of women and girls in North Carolina is our utmost importance”.
“This General Assembly and its extremist leadership are playing with people’s livelihoods and the well-being of communities all across our state”, said Sen.
It’s not yet clear if that’s realistic, but Kansas City could bid to host one of the championships leaving North Carolina.
“Our women and girls in the state of North Carolina are not for sale”, North Carolina Lt. Governor Dan Forest told reporters.
In the winter, ACC titles in swimming, diving and women’s basketball will be decided in Greensboro, the fencing championships will take place in Durham and the league wrestling tournament is slated for Raleigh. The highest profile ACC event on the horizon is the conference football championship game, set for Charlotte on December 3.
The action covers championship games awarded during the 2016-17 academic year. If you are unwilling to have women’s bathrooms and locker rooms, how do you have a women’s team?
The Greensboro regional was slated for May 8-10.
