On Tuesday, Donald Trump will lay out his childcare plan for working mothers that is unlike any proposal ever put forward by a Republican presidential candidate.
The benefit would apply only when employers do not offer paid maternity leave, and would be paid for by offsetting reductions in the federal unemployment insurance program so that taxes are not raised.
Under Trump’s plan, tax-deductible childcare will be capped at the average cost of care for the state of residence and will only be available to individuals earning less than $250,000 (or $500,000 for those parents who file their tax returns jointly). When used for helping elderly dependents, Trump’s team notes that the DSCA accounts can be used for covering a variety of services including in-home nursing and long-term care.
Pence explained he’s “not in the name-calling business” and he said he was “not going to validate the language Hillary Clinton used to describe the American people”. “Republicans have been reluctant to move in that direction” on child care, she noted.
