Nelly fans stream his hits to help pay off reported IRS debt
At the bare minimum, you’ll have to stream a Nelly joint 402,880,500 times to make a decent dent on his tax issues.
After the IRS slapped Nelly with a massive tax lien totaling $2.4 million, fans quickly rallied on social media to help their favorite rapper. This spawned an effort by fanatics, led by an article from Spin, to accrue at least 287 million streams of his songs to raise the appropriate funds.
Spotify recently revealed that artists may receive between $0.006 and $0.0084 per song play and this amount is usually split between the musicians and their labels.
However, fans realize that they don’t actually have to listen to Nelly’s songs, but can put Nelly’s songs on mute and on repeat on their favorite streaming services and leave the songs streaming all night.
That means if he doesn’t start paying up, they could start seizing his assets and property.
However this fan appears to have calculated the exact numbers needed, claiming 39,000,000 paid Spotify users only need stream 104 minutes of Nelly songs.
Reminder: In addition to face Band-aids, this is the man responsible for you telling your best friend you thought your butt was GETTIN’ BIG every four seconds that same year. Nelly is also said to owe $149,511 (£113,000) in taxes to the state of Missouri in a separate debt that dates back to 2013. The #SaveNelly and #HotInHerreListeningParty phenomenons took Twitter by storm, and some hilarious GIFs and photos ensued. In 2015, fans were searching “Nelly arrested” to find out what happened with him in Tennessee. If anything, this tells us that the love for Nelly is still going strong.
