ITT Tech Closes More Than 130 Campuses

Calling the closure an unwarranted federal action, ITT is blaming the Department of Education. He said ITT’s closing was abrupt – way more sudden than for-profit Corinthian College’s closing for the same reasons past year.

The chain was banned August 25 from enrolling new students who used federal financial aid because, Education Department officials said, the company had become a risk to students and taxpayers.

In a Big Bang solution to an intractable problem, ITT Educational Services, parent of ITT Tech, shut down all of its 130 campuses over the Labor Day weekend.

As a result of its actions, ITT Tech has put the futures of tens of thousands of students across the country in jeopardy.

Last month, the U.S. Department of Education banned the for-profit college from enrolling new students using federal aid.

The college has faced scrutiny before. The school now faces fraud charges from the Securities and Exchange Commission accusing executives of lying to investors about losses from its student loan program.

ITT operated vocational schools in 38 states. Attorneys general in 19 states have also investigated the school.

As for the students ITT Tech left behind, they are left with student loans and credits that most likely will not transfer.

Investigations into the school include one from the office of the Iowa Attorney General.

A voice mail recording at the ITT campus at Lake Mary said the administrative offices were closed and the messages were full. Rose campus on Tuesday, after learning classes there have been canceled indefinitely. The college previously operated a campus in Cedar Rapids, but that location was already shuttered.

The Tennessee Higher Education Commission announced plans to help the more than 1,900 Tennessee students affected by the closing.
