Redditch MP pledges support for latest Boundary Commission proposals
The BCE conducted the review following a parliamentary decision to reduce the number of United Kingdom constituencies from 650 to 600 in order to even out their size.
You can tell much from the government’s making boundary review a priority over House of Lords or electoral reform – obvious choices if you are actually interested in making the United Kingdom more democratic.
The aim of the proposals is to reduce the number of MPs in the House of Commons and create equal size seats.
The significant changes include one constituency straddling the River Tees, and the boroughs of both Middlesbrough and Stockton divided between three constituencies each.
The Victoria ward, which contains part of the town of Crosby, and which is included with the Crosby town ward of Blundellsands would become part of the proposed Sefton Central constituency.
“It makes geographic sense and there are strong community and transport links between the areas”.
The borough’s third seat, Chipping Barnet, will take in Cockfosters as well as Mill Hill ward, one of the most populous Jewish areas in the country.
“We are very happy that the Commission should review boundaries given population shifts but this should be done in a fair way, not like this”, he added”.
WORCESTER would be largely unchanged under plans to redraw the electoral map in the United Kingdom revealed today (Tuesday).
If you reduce the number of MPs in Parliament without reducing the number of ministers, you increase the power of the executive and make it more hard to challenge the government. “I will be looking closely at the proposals”.
“So I give the changes a cautious welcome while we wait to hear what the community says about the proposals”.
In the south of the Watford constituency there have been some modifications to local government ward boundaries around the Oxhey Hall and Hayling ward, the South Oxhey ward, and the Carpenders Park ward.
In the West Midlands the number of constituencies will drop from 53 to 47.
The main changes across Greater Lincolnshire will affect the current Sleaford and North Hykeham constituency, Lincoln and the constituencies in North and North-East Lincolnshire.
Southport should extend across the Merseyside/Lancashire county boundary to include three wards from South Ribble.
However, two constituencies, Runnymede and Weybridge, and Spelthorne fall below the 5% limit of the electoral quota.
Meanwhile, Langstone, Llanwern and the remainder of Newport East will be merged into Monmouth, while the Newport West wards of Graig and Rogerstone will join Caerphilly and Caerleon will become part of Torfaen.
