Manchester United write off £6.7million on Bastian Schweinsteiger
Today brought an utter humiliation for one of the most iconic players in German football history.
Manchester United have been forced to write off £6.7mn as a player asset for Bastian Schweinsteiger following José Mourinho’s exclusion of the World Cup victor from his squad. United released their fiscal year results today, as a sports team that’s publicly traded on the stock market is keen to do.
Schweinsteiger is set to leave United.
However, that looks even more unlikely because under the “exceptional items” section of United’s annual results, it listed a sum of £6.7m “related to a registrations’ impairment charge regarding a reduction in the carrying value of a player no longer considered to be a member of the first team playing squad”.
Now, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.com, French Ligue 1 side Marseille are reportedly interested in offering Schweinsteiger a way out of Old Trafford in January and you might well expect that Mourinho will be happy to offload the unwanted midfielder at the first opportunity.
While it has now widely been reported that that player is Schweinsteiger, he hasn’t been included among the club’s assets as ultimately United are looking to offload him for nothing and so including him wouldn’t have made a good impression on investors.
The German midfielder is not wanted by new boss Jose Mourinho and can not train with the senior players, while he has been left out of their Europa League squad.
Schweinsteiger has also indicated that American Major League Soccer is an option, but unfortunately, the MLS transfer window is closed. Schweinsteiger said earlier this month it’s his dream to play at Old Trafford again, per Samuel Lovett of the Independent, although United seem to have taken a clear standpoint on his status.
According to The Mirror, the former German global is now on £190,000-a-week, and with two years remaining on his deal, United face the very real prospect of shelling out £19m on his salary until 2018.
