Survivor of shooting that killed her parents is recovering
FBI spokesman Todd Palmer confirmed Jason and Tana Shane were killed but would not confirm or deny Ada Shane’s version of events.
Deniz is being investigated in connection with the shootings of a couple and their adult daughter near Pryor, Montana, according the Billings Gazette.
Bullets whizzed past a woman’s head as she fled from an 18-year-old gunman who had posed as a stranded motorist to convince her family to help him on the roadside of a Montana Indian reservation, the woman recounted to relatives.
It is unclear what led to the shooting in the town of just over 600 people.
A suspect, identified by a Wyoming Highway Patrol dispatcher as Jesus Deniz, was arrested at around 12:30 p.m. about eight miles north of Meeteetse, Wyo.
Special Agent Larry McGrail II’s statement filed Thursday says Jesus Deniz opened fire because one of the victims laughed at him.
Jorah Shane, 26, did not know her parents’ fate before she went into surgery Wednesday night for the bullet lodged in her spine.
“He’s only 18, and he looked like an innocent boy”, Ada Shane said. They drove her back to the scene of the shooting, where they got out of the auto and walked toward the couple still lying in the road. The man pulled a gun and held it to the temple of 51-year-old Jason Shane. When they returned to the stranded man, the shooting took place.
Tana Shane told her daughter in their Native American language to run. She fell, heard another shot, and started running again toward a church just as a vehicle was pulling out. A auto approached her and she jumped in when the driver got out.
Jorah Shane was interviewed Wednesday by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents as she recovered from her injuries. A bullet had grazed her head and she had a gunshot wound to the back. The family has kept the television in Jorah’s room off and are still trying to figure out how to tell her about her parents, according to The Washington Post. She was then taken to hospital and is said to be “incoherent”.
Big Horn County Attorney Jay Harris said he plans to conduct a full investigation into Mendoza’s activities while he was in the county, before the shootings occurred.
Park County sheriff’s spokesman Lance Mathess said his agency has been instructed by the FBI and Bureau of Indian Affairs not to release any information on Deniz.
Hugs did not immediately return messages to The Associated Press.
