Wins for the Steelers and 49ers complete the NFL’s opening weekend
Trailing early in the second quarter on Monday night and his team well within field goal range, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin could have opted for a field goal that would have cut Washington’s lead in half.
Pittsburgh put the icing on the cake when DeAngelo scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 6 yard runs. With that said, Roethlisberger threw deep on 3 and 3 three times Monday night against the Redskins and he completed two of those passes to Brown for gains of 26 and 16 yards.
As for how he would rate Cousins’ showing against Pittsburgh, Gruden said, “I don’t grade A, B, C, D, E and F. This isn’t college or high school”.
Nevertheless, with the game over, Norman looked to swap jerseys with the Steelers star receiver, and that’s where it became awkward. “There’s nothing more I can say about that play”.
Washington gained only 55 yards on the ground.
Despite Kirk Cousins’ breakout 2015 season and the arrival of free agent Josh Norman, Washington is still playing under a cloud of national skepticism after winning a weak division without beating a team with a winning record last season. Second-year receiver Sammie Coates had two receptions for 56 yards and second-year tight end Jesse James had five catches for 31 yards. Listen to this insane stat: the last 16 games Ben and Antonio have both been healthy they have connected on 151 passes for 2,048 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Luckily for the Steelers, it went into the hands of Rogers and not a Redskin. But it’s clearly some help is needed on that side of the ball, including some adjustments scheme-wise from defensive coordinator Joe Barry to dictate better matchups. “Got to respect them, tip our hats off to them, go back in and get ready for next week: the Dallas Cowboys”.
Because the Steelers won 38-16, Holland is at least going to start growing up in black and gold until she can decide for herself which team to support. Game charting data for the offensive line isn’t available until week two, but anytime you can keep the franchise quarterback mostly upright, that’s an acceptable night.
There will be tougher opponents ahead, starting with the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday at Heinz Field. Sure, they spent much of the game trying to come from behind, but that kind of imbalance usually spells disaster for an offense. Without these points this game would have been as embarrassing as the Rams’ loss to the 49ers Monday night.
NOTES: Linebacker Ryan Shazier left the game in the fourth quarter with a right knee injury and did not return, but he said afterward that he was removed for precautionary reasons. “They were doing a good job of just dropping out, forcing us to take things underneath. It was one really bad decision, and that’s kind of what I saw him nearly reverting back to in Week 1”. But until then, could we really complain about it if they’re preventing the other team from scoring?
