Father, stepmother of ex-NASCAR driver Robby Gordon found dead
Police in the Southern California city of Orange say a man and a woman have been found dead inside a home and a neighbor says the man was the father of former NASCAR racer Robby Gordon.
Property records show Robby Gordon has owned the home since 1989.
“I’m sad and I can’t believe it”, Gordon said.
In 2012, he became a racing promoter and a year later created Robby Gordon’s SPEED Energy Formula Off-Road series, which has a Super Trucks race at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa scheduled for Friday and Saturday nights. He now is competing in the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road series, the website reported, a series that he created in 2013.
Neighbors told the TV station that Robert and Sharon Gordon are the parents of Robby Gordon.
Racer Dale Earnhardt Jr., who has won multiple NASCAR championships, tweeted that he was praying for the Gordon family.
Robby Gordon told the Orange County Register that family members had become concerned when his father missed a doctor’s appointment. Gordon finished his NASCAR career with three wins and 39 top-ten finishes.
As news of the death of the NASCAR driver’s family began to spread, the NASCAR community began sending their condolences to the Gordon family. Gordon’s appeared in 575 races over 20 years with his best (ninth place) finish occurring at the 2003 Winston Cup Series. Keyes said autopsies were scheduled to be conducted Thursday. He almost won the 1999 Indy 500 before running out of fuel in the closing laps.
Gordon had the distinction of being one of only four drivers to complete in the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. The driver tweeted Wednesday that his wife had given birth to a boy.
Gordon’s sister Beccy only recently married Indianapolis 500 victor Ryan Hunter-Reay and the pair just announced the birth of their first baby.
