England call up Haseeb Hameed and Gareth Batty for Bangladesh tour
Hameed has played his way into contention to become captain Alastair Cook’s opening partner after a stellar county season which has yielded more than 1,000 runs.
That’s certainly true too of 21-year-old left-hander Duckett, who has been included in both England’s Test and one-day squads for Bangladesh. They also have to work out if they need a third or even a fourth spinner in addition to Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid for the turning tracks they are likely to encounter in the sub-continent.
Lancashire wicketkeeper-batsman Buttler returns to the Test squad for the first time since October 2015, as does fit-again Durham fast bowler Mark Wood. Durham seamer Mark Wood is named in the 17 and could add to his eight caps with the last coming almost 12 months ago.
Yorkshire batsman Joe Root, an England mainstay in all three global formats, will be rested for the three one-day internationals, which begin on October 7, before joining the Test squad.
Cook will arrive earlier than his fellow Test specialists next month, then return home for the birth of his second child and hope to be back for the start of the series.
Cook will miss the two warmup matches but will be back in time for the first of two tests.
National selector James Whitaker believes Hameed, who would become England’s youngest opener at just 19 if he got the nod against Bangladesh in Chittagong next month, has “run-scoring in his DNA”.
“The challenge we face will…” “His four centuries, against some of the best bowling attacks in the country are testament to his outstanding temperament and attitude”.
“We’ve given him a challenge to compete for the top of the order”, he said.
“Ben Duckett merits his call-up to both squads after showing his qualities as an attacking batsman, both in the county game and for the England Lions”.
“He’s taken his chances in pressure situations this year – whether it’s Lions cricket, Twenty20 finals day [for champions Northamptonshire] or two or three weeks running up to selection”.
“Selecting four spinners for the Test matches will give the coaches and captain plenty of options”, National Selector James Whitaker said in an European Central Bank statement. Batty is one of four slow bowlers in the squad.
Dickason said it was safe to tour but that was not enough to persuade Hales and England one-day captain Eoin Morgan to travel to Bangladesh.
In terms of changes for the test series, Paul Farbrace will be replaced by Ottis Gibson as assistant to Trevor Bayliss. His experience was a factor for the selectors, and he may yet earn a shock callup on the subcontinent, as England will move on from Bangladesh to India, where five tests are scheduled.
