Bauer, Lindor lead Indians past Marlins 8-3
So much for dream scenarios. Two pitches into the eighth inning, Bryan Shaw allowed a solo home run to Marlins catcher J.T. Realmuto, tying it 3-3.
By the end, he was so frustrated he thought of trying something insane.
It’s September, the Indians are in first place, and they are hot.
“I got hit”, Fernandez said.
“Every at-bat I’m thinking about getting a hit”, said Lindor.
It was yet another demoralizing setback for the fading Marlins, who have lost seven of their past eight and are looking nothing like the wild-card contender they are pretending to be. Lindor is batting.500 while hitting safely in seven straight contests and the American League Central-leading Indians will try to extend their winning streak to six contests when they go for a three-game interleague sweep of the visiting Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Not even a three-run lead in the hands of their best pitcher is safe anymore.
“I’m concerned with the results”, acknowledged Marlins manager Don Mattingly. We needed to get a ways [better] from that. Obviously, it went the other direction. Post-ASB, however, has been much more of a struggle for The Dzar has he has struggled to go deep into games and get batters out.
It was looking good early for the Marlins on Saturday. Chisenhall also fell behind in the count at 1-2, then hit a sinking liner to right field that fell in for a single.Martinez, who went to second on Ramirez’s hit, scored the winning run as Chisenhall was mobbed by his teammates.Indians reliever Cody Allen (3-5) got the win.Miami scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead. With the score 3-3, Miguel Rojas led off the Marlins’ ninth with a double to left field off Andrew Miller.
Fernandez, meanwhile, gave up plenty of both. Six of those 12 hits were for extra bases as the Indians banged out five doubles and a home run.Cleveland extended its winning streak to five games while the Marlins have lost seven of their last eight.Coco Crisp, in his debut with the Indians after being acquired in a trade with Oakland on August 31, had three hits.
Danny Salazar had another positive outing to put his disabled list stint behind him, allowing just one run on six hits and striking out 11, which tied a career high. He would exit in the sixth after giving up a dozen hits, one more than his previous high.
Fernandez said about the only better lineup he’s ever faced belongs to the Cubs. “One through nine I thought we did a pretty good job at the plate tonight”. “I was trying to battle, man”.
Asked about Coco Crisp’s three hits Saturday night in his second coming with the Indians, Francisco Lindor said, “Coco has been doing this for a long time”.
Pedro Alvarez and Chris Davis hit two-run homers in the second inning, and Manny Machado added a two-run shot in the fourth.
Fernandez has one of the most electric arms in the big leagues, but has had his issues since the all-star break.
But the Indians jumped on him quickly and never let up. Once he was taken out in favor of reliever Kyle Barraclough, the Indians put together a three-run seventh inning to take their first lead of the day.
The Indians are an MLB-best 32-11 at home since June 1 and have 29 come-from-behind victories on the season.
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t give a chance for my team to win”, Fernandez said.
