Attorneys of boy shot by Columbus officer seek witnesses
Mr Braxton said police told them to get down. When officers caught up with the two, Tyre allegedly pulled what has now been identified as a BB gun with a laser sight, and was shot and killed.
The police chased the pair into a nearby alley and tried to take them into custody.
Bryan Mason, the officer who fired multiple shots at Tyre King, remains on administrative leave. The officer that shot King is a nine-year veteran on the force.
Mr Braxton has been interviewed by police but not charged.
Earlier this summer, a Supreme Court-appointed task force studying the grand jury process in OH issued a report recommending that all Police Use of Lethal Force cases be investigated by the state attorney general. Fatal shootings that involve a white cop (which Mason is) and a person of color (which Tyre was) are immediately of public concern, placed under the microscope. The officer is a well-respected policeman who did what he had to do in that circumstance, Jason Pappas, head of the local police union representing Mason, said Friday. According to CNN, in 2012, Mason responded to a 911 call at a Columbus home and fatally shot an armed man.
Sirens are heard moments later as police search for the suspects. The man who was robbed said he was uninjured, but had $10 stolen from him.
“Our officers carry a gun that looks practically identical to this weapon”, said Jacobs, adding, “It turns out not to be a firearm, but as you can see, it looks like a firearm that can kill you”. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
An attorney for Tyre’s family, Sean Walton, called for an independent investigation.
“The family has different accounts of what happened that night which we’re still verifying”, Brown said.
“The family is obviously distraught by the murder of Tyre”, attorney Chanda L. Brown said in the statement, describing King as a caring and loving eighth-grade boy who enjoyed playing sports, including gymnastics, and was even selected for the young scholars program. He had a slight build and, if anything, was on the small side for his age, the lawyer said.
As athletes in schools and in professional leagues around the US have increasingly – many are taking a knee as “The Star-Spangled Banner” is sung at games and matches, to protest police violence and racial inequality – the Columbus football team’s pledge is a different way to express pride in one’s freedoms.
The shooting will be investigated thoroughly, authorities said, to determine if charges are warranted. In that case, the man was pointing his gun at another man, and refused orders to drop his weapon. Grainy footage from a surveillance video shows Tamir standing up from a concrete picnic table beneath a now iconic gazebo and being shot by rookie patrolman Timothy Loehmann within two seconds of a cruiser skidding to a stop on a slippery sidewalk less than 5 feet away. The officer and his partner were cleared of wrongdoing.
The King family, in a statement said that it retained to investigate the shooting as “numerous witness accounts are in direct conflict with the officer’s version of events”.
It was “indisputable” that the boy was drawing the pistol from his waistband when he was shot, Tim McGinty, Cuyahoga County prosecutor, said at the time.
