Cop shot, critical after gunfire exchange; 1 suspect dead
Two Cumberland County men were arrested Saturday, Sept. 3 in connection with a shooting earlier in the morning in Atlantic City that resulted in the death of one man, and the shooting and hospitalization of an Atlantic City Police Officer, Acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Diane Ruberton said in a statement.
The incident happened around 2:30 a.m. Saturday outside the Caesars Atlantic City parking garage, located on Arkansas Avenue, when officers were on routine patrol. The second officer returned fire, hitting and killing one suspect, later identified as Jerome Damon, 25, of Camden.
At least one of the men in the auto opened fire, Atlantic City police Chief Henry White.
The shooting happened after the two officers, who were in a marked patrol vehicle, stopped on Arkansas Avenue, between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, after spotting a group of males on the street “who were involved in some sort of criminal activity”, Fair said.
Authorities initially had been looking for five suspects and released security footage showing a group of three men walking on a city street followed closely by another group of three men.
The officer was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, where he went through surgery. Weick, along with the other Miss America contestants, are in Atlantic City ahead of the 2017 “Miss America” pageant on September 11. “This is an active investigation”, the department said on Twitter. Martell Chisholm, 19, of Millville, and Demetrius Cross, 28, of Bridgeton, each were being held on two counts of attempted murder, three counts of robbery and weapons offenses, Ruberton said.
Atlantic City Mayor Don Guardian called the shooting ‘a sad commentary on society’. Maisonet shot and killed Romero at the mall before fleeing and eventually shooting himself in another store.
“These are good examples of what happens when too many of these assault weapons are in the wrong hands”, he said.
A $20,000 reward is now being offered for information in the police shooting outside casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
