Mets sign Tim Tebow
Former Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has signed a minor-league deal with the New York Mets as he aims to pursue a career in baseball, it was confirmed Thursday.
Tebow will begin his professional career in Port St. Lucie, Florida, with the Mets’ instructional league team. He will participate in the organization’s fall instructional league in Port St. Lucie, Florida, which runs September 18 to October 8. After working with ex-Met David Aardsma and catching the eye of a MLB general manager with a powerful left-handed swing, Tebow was on the radar for the majority of teams across baseball. The former Heisman Trophy victor from the University of Florida is a regular contributor to those networks’ college football coverage.
Tebow, who once led the Denver Broncos to a hail mary playoff win and whose plane was tracked by media nationwide when he flew to NY to sign a deal with the Jets as a backup quarterback, hasn’t played baseball regularly since his junior year of high school. He was with the New England Patriots in 2013 preseason and Philadelphia Eagles in the 2015 preseason.
The Mets are not the first NY sports team to have signed Tebow.
Legendary NFL coach, player and Pickens resident Sam Wyche has announced that he is waiting on a heart transplant.
Even if Tebow, 29, has little chance of actually donning a Mets uniform at Citi Field. Though he was once a standout high school baseball player, Tebow gave it up in his junior year to focus on football.
After his workout last week, Tebow told reporters that his goal was to forge a successful major league career, and not just simply make it to the major leagues. “Then again, I don’t have to listen to what everybody else says”.
It has been said by Sandy Alderson that Tebow, who works as a commentator for ESPN during SEC college football games, would miss a few days of the Instructional League due to his arrangement with ESPN. “And there wasn’t a season that went by where (baseball) wasn’t something that I thought about”. “But I’m looking forward to putting in the work and I felt like this was the best fit”.
