Leaked Colin Powell emails fault Trump and Clinton
So it wasn’t exactly the type of day Powell thought he’d be waking up to; after all, he’s already been dragged into the 2016 race against his own volition through the Clinton private server disaster. “That’s what the 99% believe”.
Clinton sought Powell’s advice on how to use private email at the State Department during a dinner in 2009, and Powell has said she tried to “pin” her scandal on him. “I have to say, I’m increasingly concerned about Donald Trump’s alarming closeness with the Kremlin over the course of this campaign”. He also said Trump wanted to know if Obama was a Muslim. Powell had served as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under the George H.W. Bush administration, and continued in that position for less than a year under Clinton’s administration.
In the same message, Mr Powell called Mr Trump’s claim that “within four years he would have 95 percent of blacks voting for him a schizo fantasy”.
Buzzfeed reported Powell’s comments about Trump were sent in an email to journalist and former aid to Powell, Emily Miller, on June 17.
“What I think is really important about these emails is the chilling fact … that the Russians are continuing to attempt to interfere in our election”, Mrs. Clinton said. Peggy Cifrino, an aide to Powell, told CNN: “The emails are accurate”.
In another message, Mr. Powell said that Mr. Trump was responsible for a “racist” effort to show that President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother and a Kenyan father, but a popular conspiracy theory stoked in part by Mr. Trump asserted he was born overseas and could be ineligible for the presidency. Decrying “friggin record rules”, Powell wrote that he “saw email more like a telephone than a cable machine”, in one email cited by The Intercept. Of the former Vice President Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz, Powell referred to them as, “idiots and a spent force peddling a book that ain’t going nowhere”.
“I have no further comment”.
No, not that Secretary of State (though we’re sure you’ll hear more about her emails after this whole “Hillary is mere moments from death” business cools off).
He defended Hillary Clinton against criticism about the attack on a diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya.
In a hacked email exchange with his successor Condoleezza Rice, the December 2015 correspondence, first reported by BuzzFeed News, revealed that Rice agreed with Powell’s assessment.
During a recent forum on national security, Trump predicted that, as president, he would have a “very, very good relationship with Putin”, whom he described as a “leader”. “Pat Kennedy, Intel community, DS and yes HRC”, referring to Clinton. Rice said she completely agreed.
