Tropical Storm Warning in effect as Hermine moves north

A Tropical Storm Warning remains in effect for Southern Fairfield, Southern New Haven, Southern Middlesex, Southern New London, Hudson, Eastern Essex, Eastern Union, Southern Westchester, New York (Manhattan), Bronx, Richmond (Staten Island), Kings (Brooklyn), Northwestern Suffolk, Northeastern Suffolk, Southwestern Suffolk, Southeastern Suffolk, northern Queens, northern Nassau, southern Queens and Southern Nassau.
Governors along the Eastern Seaboard announced emergency preparations. In North Carolina, a tractor trailer overturned on a bridge over the Alligator River, killing the driver.
“The most pressing issue this morning will become the possibly unsafe storm surge in the Hampton Bays area of Virginia”, he said.
However, storm damage is not expected.
At 8 p.m., the hurricane center said the tropical storm was approaching the tourist resort of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina amid warnings the storm threatens a unsafe storm surge up to southeast Virginia.
It was moving east-northeast at 12 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds at 70 miles per hour.
A turn toward the northeast and the north with a decrease in forward speed are expected on Sunday, followed by a slow northward to northwestward motion through Monday, the NHC said in a public advisory.
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe warned Friday that people faced a strong possibility of “life-threatening” storm surges in coastal areas over the weekend.
“Don’t be lulled by the nice weather”, Christie said, referring to the bright sunny skies along the Jersey Shore on Sunday. Tropical Storm Hermine churned through south Georgia after making landfall in Florida.
In Georgia, Telfair County saw steady rain throughout the day as Tropical Storm Hermine left its mark on Friday.

New Jersey officials ordered swimmers out of the surf.
Elsewhere along Hermine’s path, people were having decidedly less fun. Major airlines are dropping fees for travelers who wish to change their plans. And Amtrak canceled or altered some service as the storm approached.
The New York Post said police issued $80 tickets to at least four surfers at the Rockaway Beach surf spot.
On Tuesday, wind, high surf and showers will linger on Tuesday.
The Steamship Authority posted a statement on its website that said they were anticipating possible cancellations as early as late Sunday afternoon on the Hyannis-Nantucket route and possibly before the end of its scheduled operating day on Sunday for the Woods Hole-Martha’s Vineyard route due to the impacts of Hermine.
