George Washington reportedly fires head coach Mike Lonergan
According to Dan Wolken of USA Today, George Washington will relieve head basketball coach Mike Lonergan of his duties. Otherwise there’s little reason to part ways with Lonergan in mid-September, less than two months before the start of the new season. Lonergan won at least 22 games each of the past three seasons and had established the Colonials as an upper-echelon Atlantic 10 program.
In a statement made to the Washington Post before this latest report emerged, Lonergan denied any wrongdoing: “I will not respond to anonymous, unfounded allegations”. I would like to stay at GW.
In five seasons as head coach of George Washington, Lonergan went 97-70 and led the Colonials to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament. Other players defended Lonergan in a follow-up story by the Washington Post.
The timing of Lonergan’s dismissal suggests George Washington’s investigation uncovered evidence corroborating allegations in the Post story.
Mike Lonergan may search for another job in Division 1 college basketball, but there’s a good chance his coaching days are over.
Chick Hernandez, of CSN, reported this morning Lonergan has not been fired yet. Many former players opted not to talk to investigators. He told another, in front of the team, he should transfer to a “transgender league”, multiple players said. Allegedly, Lonergan also repeatedly made unseemly remarks about his own athletic director, an allegation at least five players reportedly corroborated.
