Tyron Woodley draws Stephen Thompson for first UFC title defense
As of now, it is unclear whether Woodley’s clash with Thompson will serve as the main event of UFC’s first event in NY since their ban on MMA was lifted earlier this year.
Tickets are expected to go on sale in the next two weeks, but the UFC has yet to announce any big names on the card. The promotion is hoping a lightweight title fight between UFC Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez and UFC Featherweight Champion Conor McGregor will headline the event. And of course, the dream return of Ronda Rousey.
The UFC has not yet announced a main event for the UFC 205 pay-per-view.
This is big news for a UFC 205 card that has dragged on without a title fight.
Tyron Woodley appeared on Fox Sports 1 today during the UFC Hidalgo weigh-in show with a special announcement. He’s riding a three fight winning streak and is 6-2 since joining UFC in 2013.
Tyron Woodley may have wanted a “money fight” against Nick Diaz or Georges St-Pierre in his first welterweight title defense, but it will be Stephen Thompson standing across the octagon at UFC 205.
Lower down the card, Thiago Alves and Al Iaquinta are set to step in the cage together and there are rumours that NY native and former middleweight champ Chris Weidman will be fighting Yoel Romero. Romero is coming of a six month suspension for a failed drug test.
Other fights set for Madison Square Garden are Al Iaquinta vs Thiago Alves and Rashad Evans vs Tim Kennedy.
