13 killed in Thai boat crash, no Israelis known to be involved
Thai rescue teams search for victims after a boat capsized at Chao Phraya River in Ayuthaya Province, Thailand, Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016.
More than a dozen people were killed Sunday when a boat capsized in Thailand, The New York Times reported.
An unknown number of people are still missing.
At least 13 people have died in a boat accident on Thailand’s Chao Phraya river after it slammed into a bridge and sank.
“There are 13 confirmed dead and 33 injured so far”, said Udomsak Khaonoona, disaster prevention chief for the city.
Passengers were travelling from Ayutthaya back to Nonthaburi, a suburb of the capital Bangkok, after attending an Islamic religious rite in the city, the Bangkok Post said.
ThaiPBS quoted Harbour Department official Surasak Sansombat as saying the boat was only meant for 50 people and that it probably collapsed because it was overloaded.
Divers and rescue workers are now searching for those who are missing, although rescue efforts are being hindered by rain and darkness.
