She said her focus would be on party policies for the next general election, whenever it might be, describing Ukip as the “opposition party in waiting”.

But later, James apologised, saying her comments were not supposed to be a “generalisation against every single individual born with a Romanian passport”.

She said: “And Mrs May – from one grammar school girl to another, stop the faff, stop the fudge and the farce, get on with it”.
He went onto claim that Ukip had “changed the course of British history” and suggested that the party had “brought down a prime minister” and had “got rid of a chancellor”.

Thanking campaigners and activists for their work in securing a Brexit win, he said: ‘And now, folks, I want my life back’.
