Paralympics GB beat London 2012 medal tally

Artem Krasylnykov struck a dramatic extra-time victor to ensure Ukraine won the Paralympic football seven-a-side gold medal as they beat Iran 2-1 in a thrilling final at the Deodoro Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

Dretar Karić (36) and Mužinić (43), who compete in wheelchairs in categories 1-3, failed to achieve a feat against Chinese Juan Xue and Qian Li who won gold and silver in individual competition. He beat Holland’s Daniel Perez 5-0.

They are a testament to what can be accomplished if we don’t allow obstacles to stop us from reaching our goals. “All of the hard work that we’ve put in for the last three or four years to get to this point, makes it just awesome to be here and to celebrate with such a great group of women”, three-time Paralympian Becca Murray said.

Watching the video recording of Ridzuan’s run, for instance, how heartwarming was it to hear the commentator describe him as the hugely popular world champion from the IPC Athletics World Championships in Doha a year ago and to see him gesticulating confidently, nearly cheekily, at the camera while being introduced, before making a near-perfect start and surging to the line in triumph, then draping the Malaysian flag around his shoulders as he celebrated? “The selectors weren’t sure about him, he wasn’t on the performance programme at one stage and I had to go and prove it myself that he was up to the standard”. This was a match over which the girls won’t be sad over for long.

The rest of the athletes that competed on Thursday were close to earning medals themselves, but just barely missed them.

She already had two silvers and a bronze under her belt, plus a gold with the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team from the night before. We have won the gold and silver in table tennis which is a huge success, our biggest to date.

With the tournament over, the team is looking ahead.
