Novak Djokovic ends Kyle Edmund’s US Open run
Edmund held easily in the first game, but saw the match quickly get away from him despite there being a few holes in the Serbian’s game early on. I take loads of positives from the way I’ve been playing. I started well with good intensity and will try to carry that on to the next match. He’s a good player.
Youzhny quit after only 31 minutes while trailing Djokovic 4-2.
Fed up with injuries, 26-year-old Sevastova retired from tennis in 2013 and chose to take up a course in management. A former top-10 player, he has twice been a semi-finalist in NY, and reached the quarters in 2013.
Sevastova, who returned to the professional game in January previous year, added: “After coming back of course you enjoy it when you win more”.

“Obviously I haven’t played too much tennis”. Tsonga continues to play his best tennis in grand slam play and has lost just one set in this tournament.
He broke back straightaway and although Edmund battled to hold serve in the eighth game, the world No 1 was not prepared to settle for a tiebreak and broke him to love to seal the match. “I’ll get back to the drawing board. I had some great matches against him in the past”. Andy Murray has closed the gap between No1 and 2 with alacrity since the clay season. The normally cool, calm and collected Kyle Edmund dropped to one knee and pumped his fist wildly.
Yes, he had taken a pasting from Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and, yes, he was out of the US Open, but he could sense – as could everyone else – that the past week represented a huge stepping stone.
Then he put out the talented young wild card, Ernesto Escobedo, also in straight sets. This is the fourth time Vinci has reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Open she’s done it just three times combined at the other majors.
Now comes the biggest challenge in men’s tennis.
He should surely be fresher than the competition, having played only 11 matches since the end of the French Open.
However, the quietly-spoken but resilient Briton was not fazed.
Still, Edmund managed a couple of breaks of serve in the third set and has a hugely enhanced reputation.
Monroe and Young had split the first two sets with Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and were trailing 4-2 in the third when the incident happened.
It was uncomfortable viewing at times, with the British No 3’s much-vaunted forehand misfiring and his serve constantly under attack from deep returns. But they headed to a tie-break, not the best scenario against a man who cranked up a 137mph ace to make it 6-6, one of 27 in the match.
Sock, 23, will face France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat South African Kevin Anderson 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-4), in the fourth round at Flushing Meadows.
Djokovic dictated the rallies and played unusually quickly between points, seizing on the initial nerves of his opponent. “It was tough but I came off a lot happier than I was during the match because I started to impose myself in the third set”. “You know, I’m confident that everything is going in the right direction”. He’s there, rightly so, he’s been very consistent at a high level.
“I actually think Kyle has a great shot to really trouble Novak Djokovic”, said Croft.
