Apple’s new iPhones are just water resistant not waterproof
Many leaks said it in the months leading up to Apple’s September event, and a benchmark test seemed to nearly confirm it: the iPhone 7 Plus has 3GB of RAM, 1GB more than its sibling. That is why interested buyers will need to preorder as early as possible to get the new handset at launch.
Apple dispatched its 2016 iPhone editions as iPhone 7 and seven plus on Wednesday and as per the official announcement, iPhone 7 is IP67 certified and water-proof. We now live in a post-headphone jack world (at least if you want to continue living in Apple’s mobile phone ecosystem). This new marquee feature, however, is only available on the iPhone 7 Plus. Instead, the new device is sold with what apple calls Lightning headphones, which works with an accompanying adapter. The 32GB iPhone 7 Plus phone will start at $769, and goes up to $969 for the 256GB phone.
In the US, preorders for the new iPhones began on the Apple website and all major carrier websites at 3:01 a.m. EDT on Friday, Sept. 9.
Apple’s relatively stingy storage options has long proven an extra problem because the company doesn’t let buyers add external storage to the phones.
Both the above offers are on 24-month contracts, meaning you will have to pay the monthly fee for two years.
Sony was probably one of the first few major companies to introduce waterproofing through its Xperia phones. All iPhones purchases through this program will have to be picked up at the store.
The larger 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus will set you back a lot more than its smaller sibling. Sprint, Verizon and AT&T also have trade-in deals of their own that are worth checking out.
But wait! Before you blow a month’s rent on the iPhone 7 – which will cost between $649 and $969 when it’s available on September 16 – take stock of what you actually need from your device.
