Murray to play singles, doubles for Britain in Davis Cup
It is bound to be an emotional afternoon at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow, if both Murray does partner older brother Jamie today following the untimely death of their grandfather last Friday.
The winners of the Glasgow tie will play either Croatia or France in the final in November.
They were on their feet once more moments later when Murray levelled the match at one set all but Argentina’s captain Daniel Orsanic was furious at premature noise from the British fans.
The big question for the Argentines, however, is whether the eight hours Del Potro has spent on court already in this tie will affect him on Sunday in a potential tie-deciding match-up against the inexperienced but talented Edmund.
Last month in Rio, Murray became the first man to retain his Olympic title in a thrilling 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
I have never played a match that long.
Andy will take on Guido Pella in the first match on Sunday, where victory would send the tie into a decisive fifth rubber, probably between Evans and Del Potro.
“Without a doubt”, he said.
“It’s been the best year of my career so far and I hope I can keep it going”, added Murray who won 11 out of 11 rubbers for his country last year.
“There have been so many big events in the last few months and it’s been hard to sort of prioritize every single one, but at the end of a long summer, if we get through this one, you know, we’ve got an opportunity to win again so we’ll give it everything this weekend”. “This was the type of match I was missing when I was at home”.
“I think we did really well”. Whether I win or not, I don’t know, but I can definitely guarantee I’ll give my best effort and hopefully I can. “I’m very happy. I’m very happy to give my team the second point”, Pella told DavisCup.com.
Del Potro has accomplished much during his comeback year, but establishing absolute primacy in the city of Murray’s birth was beyond him.
With his side losing both of Friday s singles, it was no surprise to see British captain Leon Smith pick Andy alongside Jamie instead of Dan Evans as he opted for the pairing who secured victory in a year ago s final against Belgium.
That removed the back-up doubles option, meaning Andy will once again be asked to play with Jamie on Saturday and compete on all three days.
But he didn’t let his side down as he secured his second point of the weekend when he and Dodig downed Herbert and Mahut to follow their win over Bob and Mike Bryan in the quarter-final success against the United States.
“We are still in it”, said Smith. “This is very important to me and my team and we are looking to reach another final in the Davis Cup”, Del Potro said courtside. Two-one down is closer than we were at the start of the day.
An 8,000-strong crowd will hope to roar Britain to victory in Glasgow, in a repeat of last year’s ties against the US and Australia.
Britain take on Argentina indoors in Glasgow and world number two Murray, who spearheaded the team’s charge previous year, will again be key to their hopes.
