A group of children in Macon, Georgia, said several people wearing clown masks chased them on the way to school. The incident happened on September 15, when a group who called themselves the “Flomo Klowns”, sparked panic by threatening pupils at two local schools.
Several local schools reacted Monday to social media posts about clowns threatening their campuses, though officials noted that there have been no actual sightings of people threatening children or schools.
In a press conference late Monday afternoon, Mayor Todd Strange, Sheriff Derrick Cunningham, Montgomery Police Chief Ernest Finley, and Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Margaret Allen addressed the carnival surrounding the clown threat to Montgomery schools with Strange saying there is no evidence indicating “any viable threats” to Montgomery. “It’s the first time I remember anything associated with clowns but it’s no laughing matter”, Salter said. Anniston Middle School and Saks High School are about 2 miles from each other. “I hate to give them any attention to encourage them any further, but we can find out who they are and we are going to charge them as such”.
Creepy clown sightings are sweeping across Alabama. In other cases, the threat has been more serious. In Greenville County, S.C., patrols have increased after reports of clowns trying to lure children into the woods.
Irondale police Officer James Lewis, a school resource officer, said a student reported to police that a Facebook post hinted at the possibility of clowns showing up on campus. Police later said they did not believe the threats were credible, but said any person found to be causing the evacuation of buildings, disrupting school activities or terrorizing another person will be prosecuted for making terrorist threats, which is a class C felony.
