Attacker shot outside Israeli Embassy in Turkey
“Everyone on our side is safe”, Emmanuel Nahshon, spokesman for the Israeli foreign ministry, said in a statement.
The state-run Anadolu Agency said police guarding the embassy shot him in the leg after he took out a knife wrapped inside a newspaper, started to shout and ignored the security officers’ warnings to stop and drop the knife.
Authorities closed the area outside the embassy following the incident.
The attacker was heard shouting “I will change the Middle East”, and reportedly attempted to attack the embassy’s security personnel before he was shot, Hurriyat Daily news reported.
He added: “The assailant was wounded in the foot”.
He added that the man reached the “outer perimeter” of the embassy and investigations were ongoing. Turkish media reports said staff at the embassy were moved to a shelter.
The Israeli embassy in Ankara, Turkey, has been attacked.
Initial reports incorrectly suggested that the attacker had been killed.
The incident comes as Turkey and Israel attempt to resolve diplomatic differences and Turkey deals with an outbreak of attacks by Islamic extremists and Kurdish militants. Ten Turks were killed in that raid.
It was not immediately clear if there was a second would-be attacker.
Turkey has suffered a number of deadly terrorist attacks in recent weeks and months.
The following month, Israeli urged its citizens in Turkey to leave the country as soon as possible due to imminent security threats.
