Man fatally shot during Charlotte protests over officer-involved shooting
The police officers were in riot gear stretched across a two-lane road.
Officers used tear gas, and then a reporter heard one shot and saw a man lying in the street near the hotel entrance. He later clarified that the above tweet was in regards to the officers’ action and not the protest.
There are now reports saying that one civilian is in critical condition and several are injured at the protests that are taking place in Charlotte, NC after the killing of Keith Scott. “Not deceased.” Officials added that the victim was not shot by police but by another civilian.
North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory announced via Facebook that “Upon a very recent request of Chief Putney, the State Highway Patrol is sending in troopers to further help the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.” . He then exited again as officers approached him and posed an “imminent deadly threat”, according to the statement. The latest encounters come as the presidential race has tightened, and both candidates have offered different positions and solutions.
“Our police handled those terrorist attacks exactly right, and they likely saved a lot of lives”, she continued.
Scott had been sitting in his auto at The Village at College Downs complex near the University of North Carolina at Charlotte when officers searching for someone else with an outstanding warrant arrived before 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, Putney said. Police say Scott disregarded repeated demands to drop his gun, while neighborhood residents say he was holding a book, not a weapon, as he waited for his son to get off the school bus.
At the apartment complex where Scott was killed, some people who said they witnessed the shooting told their version with an air of certainty even when they were hundreds of yards away.
Chief Putney said Mr Scott first got out of the auto with a gun and got back in when officers directed him to drop his weapon.
Family members said Scott was unarmed, but Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police confirmed that Scott did have a gun on him.
“Keith was a loving husband, father, brother and friend who will be deeply missed every day”, Rakeyia Scott said.
When officers approached the vehicle, Scott got out of the auto with the gun again, the statement said.
Another African American, Terence Crutcher, was killed by police in Tulsa on Friday, and officers said on Sunday he had been unarmed. Vinson, who was in plain clothes and wearing a CMPD vest, did not have a body camera. He cited as an example the shooting of Jonathan Farrell, an unarmed former college football player shot 12 times by police in Charlotte after he left his wrecked vehicle seeking help from a nearby home.
Putney said his department is trying to be as transparent as possible, WSOC-TV, Charlotte, reported. By that time, its release may no longer be legal.
An outspoken leader of the Nation of Islam, B.J. Murphy, called for an economic boycott of Charlotte at the press conference over the Scott shooting.
Three protesters were arrested, according to CNN, and reporter Ed Lavandera was knocked down by a demonstrator as he reported on the unrest in North Carolina’s largest city.
Some rioters and protesters dispersed after police fired tear gas before 11 p.m. ET. Protesters have been demanding justice and an end to police brutality for months.
There were hints earlier Wednesday that Charlotte would suffer a second night of destruction.
Among the 16 officers hurt in the violence, one was hit in the face with a rock, authorities said.
The emergency medical service in Charlotte says a person has been taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.
