Maggie Smith responds to Jimmy Kimmel’s Emmys joke
“Veep” and “Game of Thrones”, the wins at the 68th annual Primetime Emmy Awards were their second in a row. “People v. O.J. Simpson” swept the awards for limited series, winning nine of its 22 nominations including outstanding limited series, outstanding writing, lead actor for Courtney B. Vance and lead actress for Sarah Paulson.
Amazon Prime is the home of “Transparent“, victor of two Emmy Awards (Jeffrey Tambor, Actor in a Comedy Series, and Jill Soloway, Directing for a Comedy Series).
This year’s edition comes amid a creative resurgence in small-screen entertainment fuelled by a shift in at-home, on-demand viewing that has led to what critics have called television’s second golden age.
“I’m in between jobs right now”, Bush says in Kimmel’s opening monologue which shows the ABC late night host en route to the ceremony.
Mr. Kimmel added: “Thanks to Mark Burnett, we don’t have to watch reality shows anymore, because we’re living in one”.
“I was very astonished and pleased to win the award”.
That gives it a total haul over the years of 38 – more than any other narrative series since the first Television Academy prize-giving in 1949, overtaking the haul of 37 won by long-running comedy “Frasier”. This year’s British winners included Dame Maggie Smith, who won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey.
Susanne Bier, the Danish director of the BBC’s spy thriller The Night Manager, won the best directing in a limited series, award.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus picked up her fifth consecutive win as best actress in a comedy for “Veep”.
But it sounds like if she wants to get her Emmy, she’s going to have to get on a plane and come to the U.S. After she was announced as the victor, Jimmy Kimmel said if she wanted the trophy, she would have to go to the lost and found to get it. “I think that “Veep” has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”.
Rami Malek won the Emmy for Actor in a Drama Series for the first season of “Mr. Robot“, available on Amazon Prime.
“Topple the patriarchy!” yelled Soloway, while receiving her award for directing her comedy episode “Man on the Land”.
