Md. Man, 21, Dies After Fight with Baltimore County Police
This photo provided by Prinice Thomas shows his nephew Tawon Boyd, 21, in the hospital after he was punched and held to the ground by Baltimore County police officers after a confrontation outside his home on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016. A coroner is performing an autopsy to determine his exact cause of death, although an attorney for Boyd’s family claims that he died of both heart and kidney failure.
The news station notes that three police officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and an administrative investigation is underway.
A man and a woman could be heard screaming at each other on the calls, police said.
The woman told police that Boyd had been acting “crazy” and was on drugs and alcohol. But he refused to obey orders, police said, and got into a physical confrontation with officers.
As he was being loaded onto an ambulance, Boyd was still breathing and had a regular heartbeat, police said. Police said Boyd also tried to enter several marked police cars.
Francis-Williams said she is still investigating the incident, but she’s found no evidence that Boyd was violent before officers started beating him. The report says that even while Boyd was pinned down, he was continuing to try and break free of his restraints. The police report reveals that Boyd was angry and paranoid when the police arrived, saying that he was being “secretly recorded” by Styron. According to a copy of a police report obtained by WBAL-TV, Boyd yelled, “Help”. “He was trying to get them off of him”. Police officials said medical privacy laws prevent them from releasing what it was. The police department’s homicide unit, which reviews deaths involving police, has begun its investigation.
Police said Boyd became calm, and an officer asked a medic to check his pulse.
Francis-Williams said she planned to file a notice of intent to sue the county, the police department and the officers involved.
