NY bomb suspect is formally charged
Rahimi’s writings end with the chilling note: “Inshallah [God willing] the sound of the bombs will be heard in the streets”.
In one section, the complaint says, Rahami wrote: “Death to your oppression”.
Journal entries from the bloodied book showed his disdain for the U.S. government and included references to Anwar al-Awlaki, the American-born Muslim cleric who was killed in a 2011 drone strike, the Boston Marathon bombings, the 2009 Fort Hood shootings in Texas and Osama bin Laden.
Rahami was captured Monday after being wounded in a gunfight with police in Linden, New Jersey. He’s still in the hospital getting treated for gunshot wounds taken during the shootout with police officers at his capture.
The device was allegedly planted by Ahmad Rahami, an Afghan-born resident who is now facing charges including attempted murder over the bombings.
The complaint was filed in the US District Court for the Southern District of NY on Tuesday and another one was filed in the District of New Jersey. A block of New York’s 42nd Street in Times Square was briefly closed on Wednesday morning as police examined a suspicious package, which was determined to be harmless.
Investigators are looking into whether Mr Rahami was radicalised during previous trips to Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The FBI interviewed Rahami’s father in 2014 after a violent domestic dispute.

The federal charges come after Rahami’s father revealed he’d reported concerns about his son being involved with militants to the FBI two years ago. The grand jury, however, found there was not enough evidence to indict Rahami. He said if the men weren’t plugged into news coverage, it was possible they still didn’t know they had taken the bag that held the bomb. “Said it clearly attack The Kuffar in their backyard”. He says he advised agents to “keep an eye on him”.
Moments later, two men who happened to be walking on the same side of the street behind Rahami find the suitcase. Investigators have not publicly tied Rahami to those devices.
AP global security chief Danny Spriggs said he learned this week that Rahami worked there and often engaged colleagues in long political discussions, expressing sympathy for the Taliban and disdain for US military action in Afghanistan. The two opened the luggage and left with it after removing the bomb, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and NYPD. “Particularly those law enforcement officers who were injured in the line of duty”, she said.
Summit’s vice president of security services, Daniel Sepulveda, said Rahami last worked for the company in 2011.
The complaint sheds new light on Rahami’s alleged motives and means, and the time line of the incidents.
Patton says his office is available to meet with Rahami in New Jersey and represent him at a telephone or videoconference appearance.
Mohammad Rahami: He doing bad. He is also charged with planting the pipe bomb that exploded in a trash bin along a Marine 5K race in Seaside Park, New Jersey, hours earlier. Thirty-one people were injured, including a driver knocked unconscious by the blast and a woman who had wood shards embedded in her neck.
