Mets LHP Matz scratched after renewed shoulder soreness
He said Tanaka won’t throw for five days but could start again before the regular season is scheduled to end October 2. Matz said he felt “pain” that was “a little different from regular soreness”.
New York Mets’ starting pitcher Steven Matz smiles while making an appearance in the dugout during of a baseball game against the Atlanta Braves, Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2016, in New York.
Ynoa allowed one run and struck out eight in 4 2/3 innings in Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Twins.
Rookie Gabriel Ynoa will pitch against the Phillies in Matz’s place. It’s got to be day by day.
All-Star pitchers Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom have already been lost for the remainder of the season due to injuries. “So it’s going to be very hard to see where he’s going to be unless he gets a miraculous recovery of some sort”.
Matz (9-8, 3.40 ERA), a 25-year-old Long Island native, last appeared in a game on August 14, and was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder impingement after throwing a combined 225 pitches in back-to-back starts. Matz had been pitching with a bone spur in his left elbow. The 141 innings he threw between the minors and Majors last season represent a career-high for Matz. On Thursday, Collins said, “That’s a lot of things to do in a short amount of time” when asked about Matz getting ready to pitch. “That’s got to be the focus of [his] winter”.
The Mets could definitely use him back in the rotation.
This couldn’t come at a worse time for the Mets, coming off a awful sweep to the lowly Braves. The Mets entered Thursday night’s game against Philadelphia in a three-way tie for the two NL wild-card sports with St. Louis and San Francisco.
“The trainer walked into my office, and I started shaking my head”, Mets manager Terry Collins said.
