Potentially Deadly Listeria Found in Cookie Dough — Blue Bell Recall
On Sept. 21, Marler wondered if the supplier, Aspen Hills, is also the one responsible for the “test and hold” method ensuring product safety. Only 578 cases were shipped to Sylacauga, Ala.
Blue Bell is only recalling products produced in an Alabama plant because they were made with a chocolate chip cookie dough supplied by a third party.
The company said the “potential problem” was identified during routine testing.
This isn’t Blue Bell’s first brush with the bacteria.
Aspen Hills Inc. did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
If you were planning on picking up a half-gallon of Blue Bell Cookie Two-Step this weekend, you might want to back two steps away from the freezer aisle.
Listeria contamination a year ago prompted Blue Bell to recall all of its products. All of the victims were hospitalized and three people in Kansas died. That can happen if people don’t trust the food a company is selling.
Blue Bell stated they continue to work closely with our regulatory agencies, and remain committed to ensuring they are producing safe products for our consumers to enjoy.
The products recalled include specific half gallons and pints of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and half gallons of Cookie Two Step ice cream. The agreements require the company to inform the states whenever there is a positive test result for listeria in its products or ingredients.
Thompson says that this recall won’t hurt stores as much as it did a few months ago when all of the company’s ice cream had to be taken off shelves.
“Blue Bell is initiating this recall out of an abundance of caution”, officials stated.
“It appears at this point the issue was with the supplier”, Dawsey said. The cup was produced in the Broken Arrow plant on April 15, 2014. Listeria contamination may also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The Texas-based business announced the recall late Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s hard to say what else Blue Bell and the regulatory authorities should be doing”.
