NY explosion: No arrests made, earlier report wrong, says Federal Bureau of Investigation
“We want to get this guy in for questioning”, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
They are now being questioned at the FBI’s headquarters in Manhaten.
Both bombs appeared designed to create maximum chaos and fatalities – they also provided a trove of clues even as any suspects remained unnervingly at large. That much we do know.
Rahami is wanted in connection with Saturday bombings in New York’s Chelsea neighborhood, which wounded 29 people, and a pipe bomb attack on the Jersey shore, which caused no injuries but forced the cancellation of a US Marine Corps race.
Late Sunday night the FBI confirmed in a statement that law enforcement officers had stopped a auto and detained five people for questioning in the investigation.
Ahmad Khan Rahami has lived at that address in Elizabeth, which is above a fried chicken store.
Ahmad Khan Rahami- the same man wanted in connection with Saturday’s bombing in NY – has been arrested in connection with the explosion in New Jersey.
Law enforcement sources said five people in the auto were being questioned at an Federal Bureau of Investigation building in lower Manhattan.
Investigators believe there are more people involved in the NY and New Jersey bombing plots than just Rahami, but they do not have a good idea who those people are, two USA officials told Reuters.
No-one has been charged with any crime and the investigation is continuing, Ms Langmesser said.

The FBI and police in NY have also been searching for suspects and possible links between the Saturday blast and another explosive device found a few blocks away that did not detonate. The Guardian reported that the pressure cooker bombs used in New York City were found to have black powder residue which has been identified as Tannerite, which is widely used to mark shots in target shooting. The New Jersey race was cancelled and no one was injured.
This wasn’t the only case of thieves foiling the bomb plots around NY and New Jersey, either, as two other thieves came across a backpack left near a New Jersey train station on Sunday.
Elizabeth Mayor Christian Bollwage says two men called police and reported seeing wires and a pipe coming out of the package after finding it at about 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
A second, unexploded bomb was found several blocks to the north, on West 27th Street, during a subsequent sweep of the vicinity.
According to a Reuters report, Rahami was not listed on US counterterrorism databases. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening, the New York City Fire Department said.
Officials have not revealed any details about the make-up of the pressure-cooker device, except to say it had wires and a mobile phone attached to it. A wide area of central Manhattan was closed to traffic by the police Sunday, and security measures have been increased throughout the city.
Nine persons were also injured on Saturday night in a stabbing attack at a mall in the U.S. state of Minnesota.
Early Monday, FBI agents swarmed an apartment above a fried chicken restaurant in Elizabeth that’s tied to Rahami.
The incidents have prompted NY state officials to tighten security, just as the annual UN General Assembly debates ramp up this week. “It was extremely loud, nearly like thunder but louder”, said Rudy Alcide, a bouncer at a nightclub near the blast. “The officer then said, ‘Show me your hands, ‘ and the person went to the side of his body and pulled out a handgun and fired right at the officer”, Capt. James Sarnicki, of Linden PD, said. “This is too loud”, Mr Stanhope said.
