Claudio Ranieri sounded in awe of Liverpool following Leicester’s defeat
Liverpool host defending champions Leicester City in their first home game of Premier League 2016/17 season on 10 September.
Liverpool are bidding to end their long wait for the top flight title in what is Jurgen Klopp’s first full season in charge at Anfield. I’m really on the side of the players.
“We have to do it and that was everything that we did when we played calm football”.
“They’re so tuned – apart from one player they played with their champions from previous year”. Alternatively, you can follow every bit of the action right here with our Telegraph Sport live blog.
For the Premier League champions it was an inauspicious start to a week in which they make their debut on the Champions League stage against Club Brugge. “We will take the positives away from the game, if there are any, and look at the negatives”. It’s something that depends on each other, it’s nice but not necessary.
Firmino opened scoring for the Reds in the 13th minute when he latched on to James Milner’s flawless pass from the left side and Brazilan forward turned his marker Robert Huth before calmly slotting the ball past Kasper Schmeichel. It was his second goal of the new season.
City were outplayed in all areas by a rampant Liverpool side, as Roberto Firmino scored twice with further strikes from Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana.
“When I speak about this, I have to say (to the fans). please don’t sing my name before the game is decided”, Klopp said on Saturday.
“I want to see how we react”.
He said that it was “easy” for him to “adapt” his football to the Liverpool side because players such as Daniel Sturridge, Firmino and Lallana are “very, very fantastic footballers” who are easy for him to “play with”.
But Leicester were given hope when Lucas inexplicably passed the ball to Jamie Vardy to shoot into an empty net. “We tried in the second half, but everything Liverpool tried came good”.
“That’s what we have to do in this season – to create our own atmosphere, for us and nobody else”. We have a good team spirit here and it helps in moments like this, where you have been beaten.
