Smith to start at quarterback for Riders
Former Wyoming quarterback Brett Smith finished the game after Glenn’s injury and will reportedly get the start in the Roughriders next game.
Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Kevin Glenn has been added to the six-game injured list.
Smith appeared briefly in the 4th quarter of Sunday’s game going 2 for 5 for a total of 12 yards. He’s hoping to get a good look at the new QB on Friday night (7 p.m. kickoff, TSN, 630 CHED). Moreover, he’s going up against an Eskimos’ defence that allowed just three points in their last contest (a 32-3 beatdown of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers) and is leading the CFL in 10 of the 25 defensive statistical categories tracked weekly.
The Eskimos faced an inexperienced starter in Week 1 in Toronto Argonauts pivot Trevor Harris who threw for 347 yards and three touchdowns in a 26-11 win over the Eskimos. He’ll now have another chance in Saskatchewan, and he’s got both a good arm and solid rushing ability (he actually tried out as a running back and wide receiver with the NFL’s Washington Redskins). It’s a different game than it is back home and we run a pretty insane defence.
“I know we’ve discussed it and we do have a list of names”. Smith is a raw rookie and he will surely be tested by the Eskimos’ top-ranked defence. Chamblin said that the team will be bringing in another quarterback to the roster.
“We don’t talk about that stuff so much”, said Steele.
“But there are two sides of it. One side is thinking, ‘I don’t want this, ‘ but the other side is thinking, ‘If I want to be the best, I want to play against the best”.
