US Open results: Djokovic vs Wawrinka in the men’s singles final
It could be said that someone finally made Novak Djokovic sweat in this year’s U.S. Open. “I’m really looking forward to come out on the court on Friday in semi-finals”.
Wawrinka needed to save a match point in the third round against 64th-ranked Dan Evans before prevailing in five sets.
Perhaps McEnroe is not accustomed to the Monfils’ wacky style and in-match antics including ordering a Coca-Cola mid-match and plenty of spell-binding, oftentimes confusing (but nonetheless entertaining) points.
He can become Asia’s first Grand Slam men’s singles champion while the title would net him a windfall of $3.5 million.
The duo have faced each other 12 times in ATP tennis and Grand Slam history, with Djokovic holding a 12-0 win-loss record.
There are no chances of fatigue affecting the top seed as he has played only nine completed sets at the Flushing Meadows in 2016.
Djokovic will start as favourite in the final, holding a 19-4 lead over Wawrinka and 10-2 when facing Nishikori.
Djokovic’s fortunes took a nosedive, first as he called for treatment to his left shoulder and then as three break-back points slipped by, and with them the set, prompting him to rip his shirt in frustration.
Wawrinka was up a break in that set, but Nishikori broke right before the rain delay.
But 10th seed Monfils, who’d reacted angrily to being booed, somehow found his magic and reeled off five games in a row.
Nishikori took the first set 6-4, then went up an early break in the second.
As ESPN.com’s Carl Bialik noted,”Djokovic, who has won five of the past seven majors, is especially dominant over the younger set”.
So the fluky way his U.S. Open has gone is a benefit, he figures.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia vs. I think that’s the most important thing I did today.
In a unusual match played in extreme humidity where neither player managed their best tennis, Djokovic eventually won in four sets 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-2.
The once-dominant Big Four act is no more.
John McEnroe said: “Monfils is bordering on unprofessional”. What I’ve got is my speed. Pliskova served out the second set – the only one dropped by Kerber all tournament – and spiked a ball.
“I think for sure people was expecting a tougher battle”, Monfils said.
Djokovic will now take on
The French player had lost all 12 career meetings with Djokovic prior to Friday and after he slipped 5-0 down in the first set, he slammed on the brakes in a desperate effort to turn the tide. As Djokovic was serving to stay in the set he hit a couple of questionable drop shots from 40-15 up that Monfils chased down easily to bring him to deuce.
In an error-filled game, Monfils managed to scrape back one of the breaks with help of three double faults from an out of sorts Djokovic.
The world number one’s forehand was working well as he held serve again with no trouble to go 5-1 up in the second set.
“I was completely caught off guard when he just stood there and chipped the ball back and didn’t do much”, Djokovic said. I enjoy playing tennis.

Neither a date nor site has been chosen for 2018.
Wawrinka upset the top-ranked Djokovic that day, just as he stunned a top-ranked Rafael Nadal for the 2014 Australian Open championship.
Pavic and Siegemund chose to pair up shortly before the deadline to sign up for the draw at Flushing Meadows and did not drop a set during the tournament. “I think he’s a great champion”. He beat me in Toronto and I beat him in Australia. “Our games match. He’s a great server. Any girl would like that, I guess”.
They will split $150,000 in prize money for earning the title. Make no mistake, though, Novak was nowhere near his level as well, and he looked as rusty as someone who has reached the final courtesy of 3 walkovers should.
