Soros to invest $500 million to help refugees and migrants
The White House unveiled a series of commitments from the global community in response to the call for action from Obama and other allies in the United Nations. “If we truly want to address the crisis, wars like the savagery in Syria must be brought to an end”. There, President Obama is expected to announce United States aid initiatives, including plans to take in as many as 110,000 refugees next year, about a 30 percent increase over this year.
Earlier in the day, Obama told the entire U.N. General Assembly that nations needed to follow through on their pledges “even when the politics are hard”.
Throughout these engagements, certain priorities have become clear. Throughout we have, of course, continued to reaffirm the obligation of states to respect global law, worldwide human rights law, and where applicable, worldwide refugee law and worldwide humanitarian law.
“UNHCR will study the commitments made today over the coming days”.
“We must seek to increase global funding and humanitarian assistance, offer opportunities to resettle refugees and alternative legal routes for the admission, facilitate the access of the refugees to education and regular jobs”, they also said, noting the importance of increasing the number of countries providing significant levels of humanitarian assistance and resettlement”.
Countries participating in the summit are expected to announce individual pledges that are in line with a U.S. goal of increasing humanitarian aid by $3 billion, doubling resettlement and providing access to jobs and education, said Samantha Power, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. “We have to end wars and put humanity first”, said Taha, who was held by Islamic State in Iraq for several months in 2014.
The document seeks to standardize responses to refugee situations and provide better education and jobs to refugees.
The global leaders are meeting again on Tuesday (20 September) against the backdrop of rising ethnic and minority clashes, Syrian conflict, escalating terror attacks around the globe by Islamic extremists, especially in the Middle East and Africa, and millions of people fleeing due to poverty and violence.
“International solidarity for refugees means governments stepping up and providing fast, predictable funding, investing in host countries and communities, and giving refugees the right to live, work or study in their countries – and through that, a fighting chance to rebuild their lives”.
That figure disappointed refugee advocates who’d hoped the administration would take it closer to 200,000 refugees. We welcome the inclusion of civil society, which, in many cases, has established private sponsorship programs.
Also on Monday, Ban and International Organisation for Migration (IOM) director-general William Lacy Swing inked a new agreement by which IOM became a related organisation of the United Nations, thus strengthening the comprehensive global approach to migration.
