USOC Exploring Possible Los Angeles, San Francisco Joint 2024 Olympics Bid
Tokyo 2020 Olympics President Yoshiro Mori, left, along with Tokyo 2020 Olympics CEO Toshiro Muto, talks to media after a presentation to the IOC committee in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Wednesday, July 29, 2015.
Boasting a sustainable and prudent plan to host the 2022 Games by using a majority of existing venues built for the 2008 Summer Games, the Beijing bid committee stressed that it complies with the 2020 Agenda, 40 reform proposals approved by IOC last December to cut spending on bidding and hosting of future Olympics. By that afternoon, Boston’s Olympic bid was officially dead. I really gave up following it in detail.
The decision was made after Boston Mayor Marty Walsh had said he would not pursue a bid for the Olympics if it meant that taxpayers would have to foot an estimated $8.6 billion bill. The USOC believed the bid wouldn’t prevail over great bids from Paris, Rome, Budapest, or Toronto.
Throughout the Olympics debate, Dempsey said Boston didn’t need the games to make big improvements.
Bach also said he hopes the decision on the next U.S. bid city will involve discussions that are “a little bit more oriented on facts than emotions”. San Francisco and Washington, D.C., were the other finalists.
If the City of Angels can get organized quickly – and officials there say they can – L.A. will go from rejected host-city has-been to serious Olympic contender.
“We know from our own history how long it takes to rebuild credibility and that implementing best practices with regards to good governance and transparency can not happen overnight”, Bach said.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Olympic Committee appears eager to forward a new American nomination for the 2024 Games by a September 15 deadline.
According to Mori, the IOC side said that plans are inherently subject to change and that it would leave work on a new construction plan to the Tokyo committee. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in an interview he would be happy to discuss with USOC how to present the strongest and most fiscally responsible bid on behalf of Los Angeles and the United States. In that meeting, the source said the USOC told Walsh they needed to make sure he supported the bid and would endorse a guarantee that Boston would pick up the tab for the games in the event of cost overruns or if the games were cancelled for some reason. Several IOC executive board members have already spoken in favor of a Los Angeles bid.
On Tuesday, the next phase of the USOC’s selection process began, with all eyes focused on Los Angeles. And I think that’s what they have to realize.
The IOC already sports a reputation for making over-the-top demands of host cities. So the mayor and his staff thought the USOC, given the past precedent, would give them more time, the source said.
