Bill Nunn, actor in “Do the Right Thing”, dead at 63
Spike Lee broke the news that actor Bill Nunn, best known for his role as Radio Raheem in Spike Lee’s hit film, “Do the Right Thing”, has died.
The Pittsburgh native (his dad was a journalist and scout for the Steelers) taught acting after his graduation from Morehouse College in 1976.
“My Dear Friend, My Dear Morehouse Brother”, Lee wrote under a photo of Nunn on Instagram.
Nunn’s first feature film was in 1988’s School Daze alongside Lee, who would next direct the actor as Radio Raheem in Do the Right Thing.
Nunn died at his home in Pittsburgh after battling cancer, according to The Associated Press.
Seasoned actor Bill Nunn, widely recognized for his roles in several of Hip Hop fans’ favorite movies, has passed away at the age of 62.
While most people remember Bill Nunn for his classic role in Do The Right Thing, his filmography consists of a range of work that spans over three decades including New Jack City (1991)Spider Man (2002), Idlewild (2006), Spider Man-3 (2007) and A Raisin in the Sun (2008).
But Nunn may have made his greatest impact with his portrayal of the boombox-carrying Radio Raheem. Let me tell you the story of Right Hand, Left Hand.
Tributes rolled in on social media Saturday, with many including a shot of Nunn as Raheem showing rings reading “Love” and “Hate” on either hand. The right hand: the hand of love. Raheem was the central character in the fictional movie who died from being choked to death by police. But hold on, stop the presses the right hand is coming back. Yea, Boom, it’s a devastating right and Hate is hurt, he’s down. Ooh! Ooh! If I love you, I love you. Mookie: there it is, Love and Hate. Raheem I love you bruh. In the Spider-Man trilogy with Tobey Maguire, Nunn played sympathetic newspaper editor Robbie Robertson.
