Penn State fans cheer Joe Paterno at tribute
The Owls were lead by their defense that sacked PSU QB Christian Hackenberg and held the Nittany Lions to just 10 points. Rumblings surrounded Happy Valley already have Franklin’s coaching seat getting warmer after the Pitt loss, and another loss to a Temple team that’s not quite good as last year’s would only turn the temperature on the hot seat up to the max. Temple lost its opener to Army but then blew out Stony Brook to improve to.500, and now the Temple Owls look to win on the road today. The game is also airing as a live stream online. Although he’s been out for the last two games for the season, the 2015 all-conference selection posted 1,262 yards on the ground past year, scoring 17 touchdowns. McSorely has played pretty well so far this season, passing for 541 yards and three touchdowns. Godwin finished the afternoon with seven receptions for 117 yards as McSorley went 18-of-24 for 287 yards, hitting seven different targets in the process. Hamilton was distraught after dropping the potential go-ahead touchdown late against Pitt but his teammates sense he’s due for a breakout game.
Penn State plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Paterno’s first game, festivities that have touched sensitive nerves to supporters of the late coach and those offended by honoring him given his role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
The university removed Paterno’s bronze statue from outside the stadium and board leaders have been reluctant to formerly honor him with charges of child endangerment and failure to report abuse still pending against former Penn State president Graham B. Spanier and two other administrators.
“We’re not talking about guilt or innocence or anything other than our experiences at Penn state as a team, as a group of lettermen”, Tesner said. In State College, however, his contributions to Penn State and the surrounding community are better appreciated.
While moving in spurts, Penn State did enough damage with big-play electricity to keep the Owls from pulling an upset for the second straight year. Paterno never was charged with a crime. A 1-3 mark against in-state rivals Pittsburgh and Temple would have been unacceptable for Penn State fans restless for in-state success.
Saturday marked the 50th anniversary of the former coach’s first game. Mike Irwin and John Runnells, two members of Paterno’s 1966 team, will be on hand for the celebration and the coin toss.
With Barkley out for most of the game, freshmen Miles Sanders and Andre Robinson both saw work at running back. In order to get there, Penn State must first address an issue that has plagued the Nittany Lions throughout the first two weeks of the season – getting out to a strong start early in the game.
On the defensive side of the ball it was a rotation of new faces as Penn State battled injuries across the field.
