What other states could be problematic for NCAA?
Washington, D.C. -(ENEWSP)- The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, and Equality NC, the statewide organization working to secure equal rights and justice for LGBTQ North Carolinians, hailed the NCAA’s decision to stand up for LGBTQ equality and slammed Gov. The NCAA points out that HB2 bans local governments in North Carolina from protecting LGBT people from discrimination and provides protections for public officials (in this case magistrates) that refuse services to the LGBT community. By taking on the risk of huge potential costs, the NCAA has emphasized that its commitment to these issues won’t have a price tag. “Don’t let them be forced into repealing HB2”, Graham wrote.
Although the law’s supporters have argued that groups like the National Basketball Association, which moved its 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte, are isolated and acting for purposes of political correctness, some people suggested that the NCAA’s decision could have wide effects.
Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts says the two decisions are distressing and that she is anxious cancellations of other events, such as the CIAA men’s and women’s basketball tournament will follow.
In response to the move Kami Mueller, a spokeswoman for North Carolina’s GOP released a scathing response the same day stating, “This is so absurd it’s nearly comical”.
Earlier this week, the NCAA and ACC chose to pull their conferences out of North Carolina, citing the controversial bathroom bill as the reason for their decision. North Carolina passed the “bathroom bill” earlier this year and has received significant backlash.
At issue in North Carolina is the law known as HB2, which requires transgender people to use restrooms in schools and state government buildings that correspond to the gender on their birth certificate.
It is a cynical lie that “bathroom bills”, which would require transgender people to use bathrooms corresponding to their biological sex instead of their gender identity, are meant to or would safeguard anyone.
A surprising amount of negative reaction to North Carolina’s HB 2 is coming from the world of sports.
The NCAA previously pressured the state of IN to change a law that allowed businesses to cite religious beliefs IN denying service to LGBT individuals.
Graham continued, “I am a big sports fan”.
Mueller called the decision an “assault to female athletes across the nation” and then said, “I wish the NCAA was this concerned about the women who were raped at Baylor”.
North Carolina has been in the news recently for very unfortunate reasons.
“It’s kinda weird just because I’ve hit a bunch of shots, I’ve got a platform, and I’ve got to be able to use it and take it all in stride”, said Curry. “Other than being under a huge microscope, I don’t see it as a negative at all and I am not too sensitive to not think I can say a certain thing, or have a certain belief, and meet some resistance”.
“It takes us all the way back to creation”, he said.
