Marlins cancel game against Braves after death of Fernandez
Fernandez was among the most exciting, talented young pitchers in all of Major League Baseball. “Our thoughts and prayer sare with his family at this very hard time”.
The Marlins’ home game Sunday against the Atlanta Braves has been canceled.
From 2014-15, the Marlins averaged almost 6,000 more fans in Fernandez’s 11 home starts compared to Miami’s other 151 home games.

His life, which as we’re all learning more and more about in the fallout from his death, has been so suddenly ended that no one really knows how to process it.

“I just know that this kid, people liked him … liked to be around him”, Collins said.
“Just joy with him when he played”, the veteran baseball player said.
Many details related to the crash remain under investigation. “Right now, the bodies are at the medical examiners’ office” and will have autopsies performed on them. Two bodies were found under the vessel and one was found in the water by divers.
The names of the other two people killed have not been released, pending next of kin notification.

Authorities don’t know the trio’s travel plans Sunday, but say there is no indication that alcohol or illegal drugs were a factor.

“I’m still in shock”, former Marlins player Gaby Sanchez said on Twitter. “We have stopped this boat before over safety concerns”, he added.
Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was out of town but planned to fly to Miami.
“Sadly, the brightest lights are often the ones that extinguish the fastest”, Loria said in a statement.
Detroit Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias heard the news through a phone call and he couldn’t believe it was true.
He eventually settled in Tampa, Florida and became a United States citizen a year ago.
Fernandez defected from Cuba in 2008 after three prior attempts that were unsuccessful.
Iglesias said Fernandez “left everything behind him” in Cuba to accomplish his dream of pitching in the majors.
Fernandez, 24, was originally scheduled to start Sunday, in what have been his likely final outing of the season. “There’s no words to say what you feel”.
Collins recalled a young man who treated the kitchen staff respectfully at the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field.
A’s pitcher Zach Neal spent three seasons in the minor leagues with Fernandez and felt all along he was marked for greatness.
Veteran third-baseman Martin Prado spoke on behalf of the team’s players, describing Fernandez as a fierce competitor on the baseball diamond. Even when he got hurt, we’ve all got our theory that he got hurt because we were playing the Dodgers and he had a couple guys he wanted – he wasn’t letting them make contact. The number was also painted on the mound, and flowers rested on the rubber.
