Wentz impresses again, Eagles beat Steelers 34-3

The Steelers have always been known for their defense – especially because of the legendary Steel Curtain defense (many say Pittsburgh’s 1976 defense is the best all-time) – but Pittsburgh’s offense has stolen the show in recent years. And the other coach/QB duo to start 3-0 was Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez.

With Philadelphia’s quarterback, Carson Wentz, making only his third National Football League start and never having seen the different blitzes that the Pittsburgh defense has to offer, will this be a game where coordinator Keith Butler really brings the blitz back that we haven’t seen in first two games of this season? Those two games have come against the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Browns. Pittsburgh has focused on dropping more players into coverage to protect a secondary working in rookies Artie Burns and Sean Davis.

The Steelers don’t have many run gaps; their rush defense ranks second.

After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin gave a quick rundown of the injuries sustained. Wentz did it, though. “Definitely encouraging to start out the way we have”.

Jim Schwartz’ disciplined and calculated defense was magnificent, paired with spectacular play-calling by Doug Pederson and execution well beyond Carson Wentz’ years. So far, Philadelphia has not allowed a single passing touchdown and has allowed just two touchdowns in three games.

Wentz was slated to be Philadelphia’s No. 3 quarterback until Sam Bradford was traded to Minnesota. It was once a conversation in Philadelphia with Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick. They have aggressively embraced Wentz.

However, they will be facing a very underrated and talented Philadelphia Eagles team that is desperately trying to prove their worth and exceed all of the National Football League predictions that had them finishing last in the NFC East. He’s been so impressive in the first two games that he’s already drawn comparisons to Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning, and Roethlisberger. They still should have managed a touchdown on that series because Roethlisberger found wideout Markus Wheaton alone in the back of the end zone, but Wheaton dropped a sure touchdown when cornerback Nolan Carroll recovered enough to distract him. Bennie Logan swatted a kick away on the Steelers’ first drive of the game, and Carson Wentz turned around and took the Eagles all the way down the field for three points.

Ethan Weinstein 1 point: Philadelphia 17 Pittsburgh Steelers 24 – Wentz has a great game but Jalen Mills cannot cover Antonio Brown and the Steelers steamroll the Eagles’ secondary. They can’t play off the receivers but rather they must run with them, if not, Wentz will hit his guys in stride.

Philadelphia added an exclamation point to its resounding victory as rookie running back Wendell Smallwood (17 carries, 79 yards) gained 26 yards on two carries before bulling into the end zone with 5:45 left in the third.

The Eagles were leading 13-3 in the third quarter when Wentz connected with Sproles. Wentz tossed a TD pass to Matthews on the next possession to make it 10-0. It gave Pittsburgh the ball back-but the Steelers did nothing with it.

Wentz just kept playing. He’s picking up yards so why not continue to ride that train one more week? “It was a matchup to see and we came out victorious”.
